Dear Readers,
Prior to choosing my topic for this multigenre project, I observed one of the teachers in my school rotations using Readers' Theater with nonfiction text in social studies. The students were excited to watch their peers and excited to perform their script. I have not seen Readers' Theater used regularly in the classroom so this led me to want to research the topic for this project.
I decided to research the use of Readers' Theater in the classroom and its benefits for students with improving reading fluency, expanding genres of texts that are read, and using the strategy across the content areas. Reading is one of the fundamental concepts that a student will encounter while they are in school and what better way to become good at reading than to do it while having fun!
Questions that I wanted to answer while doing my research included: How does this strategy benefit students? Can Readers' Theater be used across the curriculum? How does this strategy improve students' reading fluency? Do I have to find pre-made scripts to use in my classroom? Can this strategy motivate students to read? What about my students, can they write their own scripts?
The research that I was able to find on this topic answered all of the above questions and provided me with insight into a literacy strategy that I definitely plan on using in my future classroom. I see this strategy as being extremely beneficial to the literacy development of all of my students no matter what grade I end up teaching.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Palacios
